Maps are formatted according to the NUTS classification obtained from Eurostat or recent national data provided by the key country informants. The national average is derived from the OECD/Eurostat databases, and the EU average from the “Health at a Glance: Europe” report published in November 2020.

Institute of Hygiene The Institute of Hygiene is a Lithuanian budgetary institution under the Ministry of Health, which carries out state functions in the different public health areas. It was established on 17 May 1808 in Vilnius. Currently the Institute of Hygiene consists of three specialised centres:

  • Health Information Centre manages public health registers and is responsible for monitoring Lithuanian public health, healthcare activities and resources.
  • Public Health Technology Centre conducts research into public health inequalities, performs technology assessment of health prevention technologies, develops and initiates evidence based public health interventions mainly in the fields of public health human resources and antimicrobial resistance.
  • Occupational Health Centre conducts research in the fields of work related factors, their relation with employees’ physical and mental health and wellbeing and develops and initiates occupational health and health-promoting activities. It is tasked to collect health statistics on HC services and personnel as well as to provide data to Eurostat, OECD, WHO but it is not involved in planning the decision making process.

Lithuanian Regional Hospitals Association The Association (Nacionalinė sveikatos priežiūros įstaigų asociacija) represents 10 healthcare organisations and its members employ up to 12 000 employees. The Lithuanian National Association of Healthcare Organizations coordinates and creates healthcare and policy strategy in collaboration with the Lithuanian Parliament, Lithuanian Government and Ministry of Health to achieve better healthcare for patients and to support healthcare reforms in Lithuania.

The Association is member of the National Committee for the Preparation of Public Order for the Training of Specialists in the National Health System (VUK).

Public procurement: efficient and transparent system of public procurement in Lithuania; total amount of funds spent for public procurements accounts of one third of the national budget of Lithuania. The Lithuanian Doctors Union participates in commissions formed by the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania, the Government and the Ministry of Health to draft legal acts, to discuss Lithuanian health problems and to prepare its reform. The Lithuanian Doctors Union has published the scientific journal “Medicina” since 1924.

Lithuanian Medical Students Association Lithuanian Medical Students Association (LiMSA) is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation that has united Vilnius and Kaunas biomedical students for 30 years. The association seeks to represent the views of future health professionals and ensure their diverse education. 

LiMSA is a unique platform for international opportunities. Since 1991, LiMSA has been a member of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA), which brings together more than 1.3 million biomedical students from 130 countries.
