Today, the European Commission and the OECD are launching their joint publication ‘Health at a Glance: Europe 2020’, kicking off the third round of the State of Health in the EU cycle.

The 2020 edition of Health at a Glance: Europe provides an in-depth analysis of European countries’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic using the latest data available.

As most European countries are currently in the middle of a second wave of the pandemic, Health at a Glance: Europe 2020 provides a much-needed preliminary assessment of the effectiveness of European countries’ COVID-19 containment and mitigation measures, health systems capacity, testing strategies, measures to protect vulnerable groups and continuity of care for non-COVID patients. The report provides policymakers with high-quality evidence from which valuable lessons can be learnt. It provides a basis to develop more effective policy interventions and build health system resilience, both in the short and the long term.

For the first time in the series, the launch event of the publication includes a high-level panel discussion with national officials.  The on-line event will be opened by Sandra Gallina (Director General, DG Health and Food Safety, European Commission) and Stefano Scarpetta (Director, Directorate for Employment, Labour and Social Affairs, OECD).

In addition to the chapter assessing countries’ resilience to the COVID-19 crisis, the 2020 edition of Health at a Glance: Europe provides an assessment of the health impact of air pollution on EU citizens. Estimates show that the annual economic and welfare losses from air pollution are extensive, amounting to almost 600 billion EUR across the EU. Although air quality has improved in recent years, the average concentration of fine particulate matter (PM) is still above WHO guidelines in the vast majority of EU member states.

The report also provides comparative analyses of the health status, risk factors, health expenditure, quality and access to care in 36 European countries.
