In a commentary for Human Resources for Health, Sylvia Szabo, Andrea Nove, Zoë Matthews, Ashish Bajracharya, Ibadat Dhillon, Devendra Raj Singh, Aurora Saares and James Campbell discuss the potential of demographic tools and techniques to enhance workforce planning and achieve broader political objectives such as the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular universal health coverage. With Finland and Nepal as examples, the commentary embeds factors such as age, gender balance and mobility in the health workforce in a new conceptual approach. It concludes that the analysis of demographics strengthens the evidence base for planning decisions and complements existing model
